Yr Hwch Ddu Gwta (Tailless Black Sow) plays a big part in Nos Galan Gaeaf, which is the night before Calan Gaeaf (the first day of winter) observed on 1af o Dachwedd (1st November).
Our ancestors believed that on Nos Galan Gaeaf, evil spirits would be able to visit from their world, and they would avoid churchyards and any places where they thought spirits would gather. A bonfire would be lit to help keep these spirits away, but when it died out they'd have to run home quickly before the Hwch Ddu Gwta, which roamed the countryside with Y Ladi Wen (a headless lady wearing white), would catch them!
One rhyme tells of how the last child out on Nos Galan Gaeaf would be eaten by this terrifying beast!
"Adref, adref, am y cyntaf, Hwch Ddu Gwta a gipio'r ola!"
"Home, home at once, the tailless black sow shall snatch the last!"
